Sunshine, rich culture, golden beaches and incredible food — Cyprus is a Mediterranean gem with something for everyone. Whether you're here for a short break or a longer stay, this guide covers everything you need to enjoy the island to the fullest.
From local customs and climate to transport tips and food, consider this your go-to travel guide written from a local perspective.
Located in the eastern Mediterranean, Cyprus sits south of Turkey and west of Lebanon. While the island is divided, this guide (and Rich Estates’ apartments) focuses on the Republic of Cyprus — the Greek-speaking southern part, a full member of the European Union that welcomes millions of visitors each year.
Cyprus boasts over 320 days of sunshine per year, making it one of Europe’s sunniest destinations.
Spring (March–May): Warm, colourful and ideal for exploring
Summer (June–August): Hot and dry — perfect for beach days and warm evenings
Autumn (September–November): The sea stays warm, fewer crowds, and lovely golden sunsets
Winter (December–February): Mild and calm — great for long stays and peaceful holidays
Local tip: May and October offer the best balance of weather, pricing, and crowd levels.

Cypriot food is hearty, fresh, and full of Mediterranean flavour — rooted in Greek tradition and enriched by local island ingredients. Expect generous portions, vibrant produce, and warm hospitality at every table.
Meze – A spread of 10–20 small plates, from dips to grilled meats; best enjoyed slowly over wine.
Halloumi – The famous local cheese, often grilled or pan-fried to golden perfection.
Kleftiko – Slow-cooked lamb, traditionally baked in a clay oven until meltingly tender.
Sheftalia – Flavour-packed minced pork sausages wrapped in caul fat, grilled over charcoal.
Souvlaki – Skewered pork or chicken, cooked over an open flame and served in warm pita with salad and tzatziki.
Greek Salad – Crisp cucumbers, tomatoes, olives and feta dressed simply with olive oil and oregano — a refreshing staple at any meal.
Loukoumades – Light, golden doughnuts drizzled with honey and cinnamon, served warm.
Pair it all with a glass of local Commandaria wine or a shot of Zivania for the full experience.
Southern Cyprus boasts some of the cleanest and most stunning beaches in Europe — many of them proudly flying the Blue Flag for water quality and safety.
Mackenzie Beach (Larnaca) – Trendy cafés, plane-watching and safe swimming just minutes from the airport.
Nissi Beach (Ayia Napa) – Iconic for its soft white sand, turquoise waters and lively vibe.
Fig Tree Bay (Protaras) – Family-friendly, crystal-clear water, and great for water sports.
Coral Bay (Paphos) – A curved bay with golden sand and calm, shallow waters.
Governor’s Beach (between Limassol & Larnaca) – Dramatic white rock formations meet clear blue sea; perfect for snorkelling and a quieter vibe.
Konnos Bay (near Protaras/Ayia Napa) – Tucked between cliffs, this small cove feels like a hidden paradise.
Lady’s Mile Beach (Limassol) – Long, laid-back stretch perfect for walks, water sports, and beachside dining.

Exploring the Greek side of Cyprus is best done by car — public transport is limited compared to larger countries, and buses, while reliable, don’t run frequently outside towns.
Driving is on the left-hand side, just like in the UK, and hiring a car is both easy and affordable. There are plenty of well-known car rental companies, as well as local providers offering great deals. For short trips or flexible travel, you can also use a car-sharing service that lets you rent a vehicle by the hour.
While public buses connect most towns and cities, they can be infrequent, especially in rural or tourist-heavy areas. If you're staying in one place, they’re a decent option — but for freedom and convenience, a car is the way to go.
Taxis can be quite pricey if booked locally, but ride-hailing apps like Bolt make it far easier (and cheaper) to get around, with upfront pricing and easy pickups.
For short distances, walking is a pleasure in coastal areas — though you may want to avoid long strolls during the peak heat of July and August.
Whether you're drawn by golden beaches, ancient sites, or vibrant local culture, Cyprus offers a truly unforgettable experience. From the charming streets of Larnaca to the lively marina of Limassol, the quiet beauty of Paphos to the buzz of Nicosia — there’s something here for every kind of traveller.
